Rhenus starts building new location in Venlo

The most southern province of The Netherlands, Limburg, is the logistic hotspot for European Distribution. The region not only owes this success to its geographical position next to the Belgium and German border, but also to its outstanding intermodal connections with seaports and the European mainland. Businesses can access the entire European market within 24 hours, because of the excellent rail, inland waterway, and road connections. In addition to its excellent logistics practices, the Limburg Region actively focuses on advancements in knowledge, innovation, and automation. Europe represents the world’s largest single market, making it immensely attractive destination for global trade.

Rhenus Road has initiated a redevelopment project for a new location in Venlo. Before the logistics service provider occupies the premises, the building at Greenport Venlo will be demolished, reconstructed, and made sustainable into a Breeam Excellent and Well Silver certified building at the request of Rhenus. Construction started in September, 2023 and should be completed in the third quarter of 2024. Logistics service provider Rhenus Road has entered into a redevelopment agreement with investment company Abrdn for an existing property located at Tasmanweg 2 in Greenport Venlo. The demolition of the former DSV building has now been completed.

When the redevelopment is completed, there will be a logistics facility spanning 33,000 square meters, compromising 16,000 square meters of cross-dock warehouse, 12,000 square meters of transshipment area, 1,400 square meters of office, 3,300 square meters of mezzanine space and parking spaces for trucks and cars with electric charging points.

Expansion in Venlo

Rhenus is pleased with the new location in Venlo. “This branch, situated near the highway, is a crucial component of our international groupage 2.0 network. From Venlo, we can drive easily to other countries or transshipment centers in Europe. Moreover, we have all the space here to facilitate and strengthen collaboration with other Rhenus divisions and to expand alongside our customers,” explains Michael van Ooijen, the regional manager at Rhenus.

Breeam Excellent

“Thanks to the redevelopment project achieving a Breeam Excellent and Well Silver level, Rhenus Road will occupy a highly sustainable distribution center,” says Dominique Schillings, Head of Asset Management Netherlands at Abrdn. “Sustainability is a central focus at Abrdn, both in developing real estate and in maintaining relationships. The contract we have signed with Rhenus Road for this property has a duration of 20 years.
